2016-2017 | SONAL MITHAL

24″ x 24″ Acrylic on canvas

These illustrations represent the distinctively identifiable historical construction layers revealed during the architectural restoration of Surat Castle. Built upon day-to-day photographic documentation of the restoration process, these paintings are created to celebrate the hidden yet existing evidence. Some of these layers may again get covered by new layers—because of structural instability or weather protection concerns. Some of these layers are being explicitly kept visible in the restoration process. In this sense these paintings serve as active medium leading to heritage presentation decisions on site. The intention is to present the castle as a site of living exhibit of architectural history.
